Basics Of Structural Engineering

Basics of Structural Engineering

Structural engineering is a sub-discipline of civil engineering in which structural engineers are trained to design the 'bones and muscles' that create the form and shape of man-made structures. Structural engineers need to understand and calculate the stability, strength and rigidity, and earthquake of built structures for buildings and non-building structures. The structural designs are integrated with those of other designers such as architects and building services engineers and often supervise the construction of projects by contractors on site. They can also be involved in the design of machinery, medical equipment, and vehicles where structural integrity affects functioning and safety.

Structural engineering theory is based upon applied physical laws and empirical knowledge of the structural performance of different materials and geometries. Structural engineering design uses a number of relatively simple structural concepts to build complex structural systems. Structural engineers are responsible for making creative and efficient use of funds, structural elements, and materials to achieve these goals.

In simple terms, we can say Structural engineering is the study of how to design structures and non-structural elements that bear a load. Structural engineering seeks to determine the stability and longevity of a load-bearing item, and design building plans accordingly

Here we give five reasons why structural engineering makes a great career.

1)We make ideas become reality

Structural engineers get a real sense of achievement when a project does complete, whether it is a skyscraper, a bridge, or a house. It is a rush to touch something that you imagined and designed, knowing that your skills were instrumental in bringing it into being. We’re involved in creating record-breaking structures, beautiful structures, functional structures, and sometimes just cool structures. It’s truly satisfying to work.

2)Our work lasts a long time

The work structural engineers do have an incredible, long-lasting impact. We also breathe new life into old structures– renovating or changing the use of buildings that were designed decades ago and turning them to absolutely new purposes.

3)We make the world safer

Structural engineers make sure all our buildings and infrastructure are safe to use. We also help society address the significant problems, from climate change to disaster relief. We build flyovers, to help bring communities in developing nations out of isolation. We study how to make buildings stand up during earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. We help improve the way we build, minimizing the impact construction has on our planet, and work to make the best use of limited resources.

4)We solve problems

Structural engineers use many skills – from fundamental mathematical tools, along with physics, cutting-edge technology, and communication.

Most of all structural engineers are the problem solvers in design teams, designing solutions to the challenges construction projects throw up.

5)We are respected professionals

Structural engineering is not easy, but it rewards hard work. We well recognized by other construction professionals for our skills, which are a vital part of unlocking the potential of a project, overcoming its challenges, and most of all, ensuring that it is safe.
